Why I walked away from Make.com and n8n

Why I walked away from Make.com and n8n
I sat there one evening, three browser tabs deep in n8n documentation, a Make.com scenario half-built, and I asked myself , "When did I become a workflow engineer?"

Can you relate? Have you ever spent more time configuring a system than doing the work the system was supposed to free you up for?

I'm a business builder. My background spans hands-on tech through to strategic roles. I've owned digital outcomes seen by millions during my America's Cup and Volvo Ocean Race years. The through line in my career has always been reaching people with content that matters. And here I was, debugging JSON nodes at 11pm.

The setup tax nobody talks about

Make.com and n8n are powerful platforms. I mean that genuinely. They can orchestrate almost anything you can imagine. But that flexibility comes with a cost that sneaks up on you.

The learning curve ate weeks. Every scenario needed custom logic. Each integration required testing, retesting, and more testing. I found myself hiring someone just to keep the thing running. 💸

Onthe subscription front, I was paying for a massive system when I needed maybe five percent of its capability. All I wanted was to create authentic content and get it in front of the right people. Configuring the tool had become the project.

What I needed versus what I got

When I face a chunky problem, I start by mapping out what exists. I look hard at available tools and I separate the fluff from the core. Most automation platforms bundle enormous functionality because they serve everyone from e-commerce operators to enterprise IT teams.

Coaches and content creators need something different. They need to say what they want to say in the way they want to  say it, to define who they want to reach, and move on with their day. The plumbing should be invisible.

That clarity became the foundation for Promana Reach. 🎯

My Why: building for my customers, not just myself

I could have kept my bespoke content engine running. It worked, eventually. But my drive has always been making things so others can achieve reach too. A custom n8n or make.com setup helps exactly one person. Me.

Promana Reach takes a different approach. You provide an inspiration, a goal, maybe some specific knowledge about your domain. A fixed agentic pipeline handles the heavy lifting. You approve, edit if you want to, then post or schedule to LinkedIn, your blog, wherever your audience lives.

The hours of setup experimentation are now gone, as is the frustration of connecting APIs and debugging webhooks. And the separate subscription for yet another platform. All gone. ✨

"I'm glad you called that out". Eliminating that voice

Something that matters to me deeply is that most AI-generated content sound like AI-generated content. You've seen the formulaic openings and the rule of three everywhere. Silicon jargon stacked on corporate jargon.

So we baked advanced constraints into Reach that force the system to bypass those patterns. The output sounds like an elite human copywriter because we've stripped away the crutches that language models lean on. Your audience won't tune out because they've recognised the "LinkedIn influencer" formula. Instead? They'll engage because the content sounds like you. 🙌

Your media, intelligently matched

Reach also handles something that used to eat my time. Finding the right image for each piece of content.

You can tag and describe images in your media library. When Reach creates content, it scans your tagged items and selects what fits. Or you can tell it to generate something new. Or you can specify exactly what you want. The choice stays with you, and you can override anything later.

Small detail, big time savings. 📸

What It means for your week

When I seak with coaches and consultants who know their message inside out, I love that they have expertise their clients will benefit from. And I get there's trust they need to reinforce, with a scheduled heartbeat they need to bake in. The marketing machine demands feeding to avoid the jagged reef of irrelevance. But creation of social posts, email sequences and blog content don't have to be avoided to swerve that reef, and the volume doesn't have to feel impossible alongside your client work.

Promana Reach exists because you shouldn't be forced into becoming a marketing automation specialist. Your focus belongs on your actual mission!

This week I'm creating a few demos that walk through exactly how this works in practice. Stay in touch. Sign up for the newsletter on this page, of just find me on LinkedIn and reach out if you want a chat or an in-person. If you've felt the frustration of tools that promise simplicity and deliver complexity, I think you'll find Reach extremely useful.
